On October 25, 2023 40-year-old Robert Card carried out a spree shooting in Lewiston, Maine, United States, killing 18 people and wounding 13 others. Luckily, no one in my family was affected, but it still shook me to the core. It felt like it took place in my backyard, due to how many times I’ve been to Lewiston, and at the time, my grandmother was staying in a nursing home 5 minutes away from the shooting.
I came up with the text myself, after hearing the news:
There are no words,
only screams
blood, pain
please fly, please fly…
This piece is a means to empathize with the families who lost their loved ones, and a cry for a societal change. This is a heavy piece of music and evokes emotions of deep pain and loss. Please make sure you are ready to deal with this topic, and that the performers can safely handle these emotions before programming.
This was my way of venting my emotions, and I hope that this piece can help people process their traumas, and at the very least make people understand the severity of the situation.
