Mixed Ensemble ~ Hard - 3’ 55”

This piece is all about capturing the energy of electricity, and turning it into an aggressively grooving chamber piece. There is a main melody that appears for the first time at rehearsal mark B; it functions as the foundation of the piece. I draw most of the rhythmic and melodic material from it. Even the chaotic opening uses manipulated fragments of this theme. The melody implies minor-Major 9 sonorities, so most of the harmonies are based around that.

It features the Tenor Sax player, with many "spotlight moments" occurring. They are required to play quite high, and be able to play multi-phonics at varying dynamics. Other players are required to do unusual things as well. The flute must be able to flutter tongue and jet whistle, and the alto saxophone player must be able to slap tongue. These effects are used in order to create aggressive and unique sounds that convey the unstableness of electricity.
